What to do When Your Problems Seem Overwhelming

Bigstockphoto_Fort_320520 I want to share with you today a devotional from Jim Smoke’s book, ”

Moving Forward: A Devotional Guide For Finding Hope and Peace in the Midst of Divorce.” Jim Smoke wrote the best selling book “Growing Through Divorce.”  I highly recommend his devotional book for when you need a quick word of encouragement or inspiration. You are sure to find a devotion that will speak to whatever you are going through that day. His Growing Through Divorce book is a great book for people who want to grow through their divorce not merely go through it.

Here is a devotional I thought you might find encouraging when you feel overwhelmed by the many “problems” or challenges associated with divorce.

When it’s time to run to the fort.

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day  of trouble; and he knows those who trust in him~ Nahum 1:7 NKJV

I remember sitting in the theater watching old-time Westerns when I was a kid. Every time the Indians came after the settlers ran to the fort and barred the entrance gate.

A fort was a place of safety and refuge for early pioneers. It was usually run by the Army and was a safe haven from bad weather and enemy attacks. Its proud flag flying overhead said to one and all that there is help when you need it.

We live in a world that desperately needs more forts- places we can run to when the opposition is ominous and we are outnumbered by our problems.

Nahum was a prophet in a world filled with people who had problems. He told his people that they could run to the Lord when their troubles overwhelmed them. The Lord would be a stronghold and place of refuge and safety for them. The only thing they would have to bring with them was their trust in the Lord to take care of their problems.

It’s the twenty-first century, and God’s commitment to you and to me has not changed. You might have enough divorce  problems alone to fill your own fort to the brim. It doesn’t matter how many or how few. You can bring them to the Lord with confidence that he will help you work them out.

Make a list of your ten biggest problems right now. Put them in an envelope and place them in the back of your Bible. Ask God to release you from your worry about them and increase your faith in Him to resolve them.

God, here’s my list. You are my stronghold and fort. In faith I trust You with my problems for Your resolution. Amen.
