Just Enough Light For the Step I'm On
by Shelley · Filed Under: Encouragement
In my post yesterday I mentioned that I have recently been through a challenging time as a volunteer member of the Student and Family Ministry committee at my church. As a result of going through this process there were a couple of things that came to my mind. Yesterday I shared how you should be prepared to share your perspective and/or experience from divorce in any area of your life that may arise. Don’t be afraid to speak up and share what you may have learned or how you may perceive a situation differently as a result of your divorce.
Today I wanted to share a resource that I originally discovered when I was “going through” my divorce process. The title of the book is “Just Enough Light for the Step I’m On.(Trusting God in the Tough Times)”by Stormie Omartian. Stormie Omartian is a best selling author probably most known for her books “Power of the Praying Wife,” “Power of the Praying Parent” and more.
This book is full of encouragement, wisdom and personal examples of Stormie’s experience of learning how to trust God in the tough times. I refer to this book often when I am faced with difficult circumstances or not trusting God when I know I should. I don’t know about you but sometimes it is easier said than done. Over the past several days I once again found this book to be a great source of encouragement during a difficult time. I have given this book to several friends when they were going through tough times. I highly recommend it.
I wanted to share the poem from the front of the book written by Stormie.
Just Enough Light for the Step I’m On
Sometimes only the step I’m on,
or the very next one ahead,
is all that is illuminated for me,
God gives just the amount of light I need
for the exact moment I need it.
At those times I walk in surrender to faith,
unable to see the future
and not fully comprehending the past.
And because it is God who has given me
what light I have,
I know I must reject the fear and
doubt that threaten to overtake me.
I must determine to be content where
I am, and allow God to get me where I
need to go.
I walk forward,
one step at a time,
fully trusting that
the light God sheds
is absolutely sufficient.
I know how frustrating it can be when your life has been turned upside down by divorce. Your future seems so uncertain. It is easy to be overcome with fear. You wonder what life will be like? How will you manage all of the responsibilities that were previously shared? How will you survive financially? What kind of a single parent will you be, as if parenting wasn’t hard enough as a team? You find yourself in a place that you never wanted to be, yet life goes on.
It takes determination and trust to persevere. It’s hard. If we can only learn to trust God, especially in the tough times, He will see us through. He will give us everything we need, when we need it (and usually not before.) We need to be willing to take it one step at a time, surrendering our will and faith to Him. He is faithful. Trust Him.
